The seeds of Club Alpha Omega began in December 2003 with a calling to begin a small, short-term Bible study on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Monterey California home of Danny "dj" and Martha Morales. Although the study had a name, the group itself met in January 2004 without a name or denominational affiliation. Its roots were born in a study of the power of the Holy Spirit shared by Young Adults who mostly came from non-Pentecostal Christian backgrounds and who also happened to be in the military. The door soon opened to move the study to its first church building, Monterey Assembly of God. When the study ran its term, the Young Adult group mostly disbanded and then re-organized as an even smaller Prayer, Praise and Worship meeting that met every Monday night under the sponsorship of Light the Fire Ministries. These nights of intense prayer and seeking the face of God were very instrumental to the later development of the ministry as the Lord powerfully visited the small group and spoke big dreams into their hearts. In November of 2004, the group received its first church covering under Faith, Hope, and Love Center of the Assemblies of God in Hollister California. The Discipleship vision of We Build People also came to the group of Young Adults at this time. A small core of Young Adults completed all four bases within 6 months, with the last base taught entirely by the Young Adult students. In April of 2005, the group transferred its covering to the para-church level, when it became a ministry of the Salinas Section of the Northern Pacific Latin American District (NPLAD) of the Assemblies of God. At this time, plans began in earnest to reach out to the entire Young Adult population of the Monterey Bay. The Monterey Bay has a heavy international student population and is relatively unreached by Spirit-filled Young Adult ministries. Club Alpha Omega would be born to touch the world with the fire of the full Gospel message through an international hub of Young Adults. Plans were also made at this time to incorporate the Alpha Course investigative study, coffee fellowship and short-term missions and outreach opportunities into the ministry. A joint sponsorship between Light the Fire Ministries (the financier) and Salinas Section Youth Ministries (the covering) would largely accomplish these incorporations. In June of 2005, shortly before launching the Alpha Course, the para-church group moved to Seaside Assembly of God, which had plans to open a full featured cafe - the Holy Grounds Cafe - perfect for Young Adults and the emerging Club. From May until December 2005, the group accomplished the Win, Build and Send vision by completing the We Build People course, launching the Alpha Course and by co-sponsoring short-term missions and outreach opportunities. The watermark event in the ministry occurred in December 13-15 of 2005, when Club Alpha Omega sponsored the first-ever Move the Nations Young Adult Convention with guest speaker Dr. Roger Ovalle, Senior Pastor and NPLAD HonorBound Men's Ministries Director. This convention witnessed the launching of the first chartered club, the first commissioning of three Club Leaders, and the launching of Club Alpha Omega Young Adults International as a chartering ministry with a world vision to win, build, and send Young Adults to advance the Kingdom one person at a time, anyplace, anytime. In the days leading up to Move the Nations, the Lord also inspired the vision of The Lighthouse Project. He also worked a miracle whereby the School of Urban Missions of Oakland, California ministered in praise and worship the last night of this groundbreaking event. The Lord powerfully visited the services and confirmed many plans and dreams for the ministry and for those who attended. The convention was followed up with the appointment of DJ and Martha Morales as Church Appointed Young Adult Missionaries of Christian Life Center of the Assemblies of God in Douglas, Arizona. What is next? - The most exciting chapter in the Club Alpha Omega story.
Some may wonder how the name and logo originated. The name "Club Alpha Omega" is packed with meaning. First, we wanted the name to be Christ-centered. Second, co-founder DJ Morales was influenced by Chi Alpha Campus Ministries when he attended the University of Arizona and, thus, wanted to honor this influence. Third, we wanted the name to be relevant to a young adult population who may be familiar with the Greek university culture, thus the Greek letters. Fourth, we were looking for a name that would be relevant to young adults regardless of whether they attended college, thus the name "Club." Lastly, we wanted a name that could convey a multi-tiered evangelistic and discipleship process "from alpha to omega." Putting all these elements together, the name "Club Alpha Omega" became a natural choice. The logo began as an attempt to capture a look which was revolutionary, strong, and bold. The first rendition was of a red and black silhouette of Jesus looking up reminiscent of a young revolutionary (Jesus was thirty after all when He began His ministry). Thematically, DJ Morales, the logo designer, was influenced by the "Holy Revolution" theme of the NPLAD Youth District in which he was a sectional youth representative. Artistically, he was influenced by the chiseled art motifs of the twentieth-century revolutions which depicted strength, resolve and glory in the cause. The intent was not to identify with these movements at all, but to redefine the meaning of a revolutionary and reapply these ideas to the cause of Christ. In Jesus and His true followers one finds the truest meaning of a revolutionary. They are revolutionary, because they have "turned the world upside down" with the power of the Gospel and the Holy Spirit. They are strong because they have carried the cross and followed the will of the Father, which required supernatural strength and determination. Lastly, they are bold because they have spoken the Word of God with great boldness. May the young adults of club alpha omega reflect our revolutionary Messiah! The artist also wanted to convey a sense of structure and order in line with the club's ministry vision and process. Also, much thought was placed into including the four cardinal truths (cornerstones), sixteen foundations of faith (cornerstones + pillars), building-block discipleship philosophy, as well as the Great Commission in the logo's final design. We hope that the name and logo faithfully embody these ideas and truths and the personification of Truth we hold so dear. Together, the name and logo should spell "Club Jesus." Post-scripts: peculiar incidents took place to confirm the name selection. The day it was decided to go with the name, co-founder DJ Morales was sitting in his college physics class considering and praying about the name, when he was startled to here at that exact moment, his teacher define the symbolic names for angular acceleration and velocity in that order, which are none other than "alpha" and "omega." Several months later when the Morales arrived in their new home in Hawaii, they were approached by a pastor's daughter, unknown to the them and who was unaware of the club. Remarkably, she spoke a prophetic word to them using details about the ministry that no one else would have known. The Spirit of God identified Himself using a name that is highly uncommon in such prophetic utterances, "for I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End."
Many thanks to Casey Wiley for helping in the evolution and creation of many of these early club designs! |
